INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

WHAT:

The Forty-Eighth (48th) Ordinary Session of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC), the African Union's treaty body mandated to promote and protect the rights and welfare of children in Africa and monitor the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child by States Parties.

The Session will bring together representatives of African Union Member States, AU Organs and Institutions, National Human Rights Institutions, United Nations agencies, civil society organisations, development partners, child rights experts and other stakeholders to deliberate on key issues affecting the rights and welfare of children across the continent.

During the Session, the Committee is expected to:

  • Consider State Party reports of Egypt, The Gambia, Libya and Mauritania; 

  • Consider Civil Society Reports from Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone;

  • Hold a Day of General Discussion on the theme “Violence Against Children and Harmful Practices: Navigating the Digital Frontier”;

  • Examine pending Communications on alleged violations of children's rights;

  • Review reports of Committee Members, Working Groups and Special Rapporteurs;

  • Consider administrative, institutional and policy matters relating to the implementation of its mandate;

  • Adopt decisions and recommendations aimed at advancing the protection and promotion of children's rights in Africa.

WHEN: 13–20 October 2026

WHERE: Maseru, Kingdom of Lesotho.

WHO: The Session will be attended by:

  • African Union Organs and Institutions;

  • National Human Rights Institutions;

  • United Nations agencies;

  • Civil Society Organisations;

  • Development partners;

  • Academic institutions;

  • Child rights experts and invited stakeholders.
